Motorcycle Safety on the Road: What You Should Know

Harding Law Firm - Wednesday, June 25, 2014

With the warm weather upon us, more motorcyclists are taking their bikes out for a spin on area roadways. It’s important to note that motorcycles offer less protection to riders and their passengers than most other means of transportation.

At Harding Law, we want all riders to pay close attention to safety. Here are some tips for bikers to follow this summer:

• Most crashes between cars and motorcycles involve turning left. If you are preparing to cross traffic or turn left, double check to make certain it’s safe to proceed.

• Slow down! Speed is the #1 cause of traffic crashes across the board.

• Always wear an approved helmet and eye protection. So-called “novelty helmets” are illegal to wear on New York roadways and don’t provide any measure of safety.

• Wear high visibility vests, garments with reflectorized features and accessories to enhance your visibility.

• Maintain your motorcycle properly. Insure all your lights and horn are working and both mirrors are adjusted. Make sure your tires are properly inflated and have legal tread depth. Good traction is paramount to safe handling and braking in all road conditions.

• Maintain a high level of awareness. Scan the roadway constantly for dangers and ride alert. If you’re tired, take a break!

• Never drink alcohol and ride a motorcycle.

• Allow sufficient space between you and the vehicle in front of you.

• Let other motorists know where you’re headed. Signal when you turn with your directional lights or even use hand signals. Flashing your brake light periodically before you stop will alert drivers behind you to be cautious.
