What You Need to Know About Protecting Your Family from Uninsured Drivers

Harding Law Firm - Friday, July 25, 2014

In a perfect world, everyone would have the auto insurance they need, with plenty of liability coverage. That’s not the case. Unfortunately, drivers responsible for car, truck, motorcycle and other vehicle accidents may have no insurance or insufficient insurance to cover the damage they cause.

If you’re involved in an accident with a vehicle with very little liability coverage, you could suffer the consequences. That’s right. If you’re in an accident with someone with minimal coverage, you and your family could be left stranded, without the payments you deserve.

Something else you need to know: many high-risk drivers, such as those with previous DWI’s, carry minimal insurance coverage.

New York State now allows people to buy additional insurance that would cover you and your family in this situation. It’s called supplemental uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage. It is inexpensive, and covers you and your family up to the amount you select when you add it to your policy.

We strongly recommend you take out this supplemental insurance to protect your family. It’s a risk you don’t need to take, and you’ll rest easier knowing you’re covered.
